Music: Viola Sonata - I. Impetuoso: Poco agitato
Composer: Rebecca Clarke
Year: 1919
Performers: Christine Rutledge, Ksenia Nosikova (piano)

Rebecca Clarke is, sadly, one of only two female composers (of classical Western art music) who easily comes to mind, the other being Clara Schumann. And honestly I probably wouldn’t have heard of Clarke if it weren’t for the fact that I played viola for many years. So….for the non-violists among us, may I present….REBECCA CLARKE, COMPOSITRIX EXTRAORDINAIRE!

For phantomviola, for what should be obvious reasons!

It is called 75 for the Anniversary of Parker, the store had very old stock and then it folded in two years. One can’t buy fountain pens here(S.Florida) for years! only on the net.The ink is a Parker Inkman they use to have in 95 and discontinued. I have just a few few refill, but the Mocha a brilliant brown went out in a few months. It came in emerald green, blue sapphire, Mocha(my favorite), ruby red was very nice, ebony black. The cup is a bone china from England with the Lovers by Gustave Klimt. I just bought that paper $12, fountain pens can’t use light paper this one is 24lb, anyone else had problems with paper? I like smooth paper classic laid and all that crap have tons of it, only good for the printer, linen is nice. That is oolong tea from the Chinese store, nice like green…I like my tea strainer haven’t seen it again.

acqua-di-fiori:

Moondog and The London Saxophonic
“New Amsterdam”
Sax Pax for a Sax, 1994

A remarkable song from a remarkable artist. Moondog is remembered as being one of the most extraordinary characters in the story of jazz. ‘New Amsterdam’ is a tribute to the New York streets which he called home for a number of years.

In an uncanny alignment of events, I just so happened upon the music of Moondog while reading the novel ‘The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay’ by Michael Chabon. To me, the music and the book go hand in hand. The story of two young men trying to make a name for themselves as comic book creators in mid-20th century New York draws some parallels with Moondog’s own story as an aspiring musician at roughly the same time.

Blinded in a farming accident as a teenager, Louis Thomas Hardin aka Moondog moved from Marysville, Kansas to New York where he lived as a proud hobo, playing homemade instruments in the street within spitting distance of the famous jazz clubs of Sixth Avenue. Sporting a long, white beard and eccentric hand-made clothing, he soon became known to the public as The Viking of Sixth Avenue. His reputation as a percussionist won him a lot of attention in the jazz world, basing many of his rhythms on sounds heard throughout the city - passing trams and howling dogs (from which he took his name). His earlier recordings are littered with surface noise of the city.

‘New Amsterdam’ is a love song to the great city, recorded in his later years with the London Saxophonic. I find it beautiful, haunting and strangely sad. Even his earlier, percussion-based compositions reflect the cheerful lonesomeness of the hobo lifestyle he had created for himself; not without an element of humour in many of his works.

—Charlie
